Why did NFL QBs had such bad stats a while ago?

Because in the old days, you could maul the QB and it was legal. Also, DB's could maul the receivers and it was legal. They have implemented a ton of rules to restrict what the defense can and can not do these days. It has made the offense more productive, thus skewing stats from today and the old days.
